Breastfeeding – Scary or Not?

I’m sure all you expectant moms have heard the many horror stories about breastfeeding. When I was pregnant I planned to breastfeed but was scared of how painful it might be based on the storeis I had heard from other moms. So, what’s the scoop, is it really as bad as all those horror stories?

The answer is… it depends. I know, don’t you hate those kinds of answers? The good news is, it can be great! My experience was wonderful. In the beginning, yes there were some pains – mostly in the form of dry flaky skin and a slight burning sensation from dry nipples. All in all though, it didn’t hurt that much. The first time baby latched it felt different, I wasn’t expecting that kind of suction, but again, not painful I don’t think. Any initial discomfort passed with time.

The bad news is, yes it can be quite painful for some people. If all goes well, breastfeeding shouldn’t be painful. If it is, then something is probably wrong. One of my girlfriends suffered through thrush on her nipples, had two bouts of mastitis and had three large scabs on her nipples. Needless to say, breastfeeding did hurt for her, but she was so determined that she fought through it and came out the other side still breatfeeding – what a trooper!!

Another common horror story is troubles learning to breastfeed. It can be a challenge or it can be easy as pie! With my first baby it was a learning experience. In the beginning I remember spending 20 minutes each feeding just trying to get him to latch! After a few weeks though, we were both pros. Then with my second, within minutes after birth she was latched no problem, had crazy suction, and didn’t let go for 45 minutes! One of my friends, on the other hand, had a sleepy baby who wouldn’t stay awake during feedings. The nurses in the hospital suggested that undressing her baby for feedings would make her cold and more wakeful. When that didn’t work she was told to get an ice cube and rub it on baby’s back when she wold try to fall asleep. Needless to say she wasn’t too fond of this approach.

So what’s my point you ask? Breastfeeding is different for everyone. Don’t listen to horror stories from your friends, mothers or neighbors because you can be guaranteed your experience will be different (for better or worse). If you want to breastfeed when your baby is born then just give it a shot and you’ll figure it out from there. If it’s easy, great! If it’s not then you can battle through. If you decide it’s not for you then you can switch to the bottle, but at least you can say you tried!

They say the Second Labour is easier than the first…

They say the Second Labour is easier than the first… don’t they? Yes, they do say that, but it is not always so, sometimes they are just different… very different.

For my second labour we went into it thinking we knew it all. Turns out we knew nothing!! First labour was textbook (see full story at First Labour Blog Post). Started with minor contractions, built up to major contractions, went to the hospital, had a baby. Less than 10 hours start to finish.

With my second labour it was not textbook at all.

Water broke early friday morning (right on the due date) at 2am, no signs of labour otherwise. Mozied on to the hospital for around 4am, still no signs of labour. Got to the hospital along with many other women who’s waters also broke at 2am, nurses were saying must have been a low pressure system or something. It was super busy so we couldn’t get a room, sat in a triage bed for a few hours, but at least I wasn’t one of the women labouring in the lounge! Got moved to a regular room around 8am, still no real labour, a few tiny contractions but nothing useful. Started to induce labour around 2pm, but baby didn’t do well with that idea so we stopped induction to give baby a rest, still no useful contractions. Started induction again at 7pm, nothing useful. 8pm the nurse thought a full bladder might be preventing baby from dropping, emptied bladder and had a baby 30 minutes later!! It was a bit intense going from 0 to 60 in a half hour, but at least it was over quick!!

So basically it was 18 hours of nothing and then 30 minutes with 5 major contractions, 1 big push and then baby! Not at all like our first!!

Then of course the hospital stay was completely different. First labour we had a private room and a pleasant experience. Second labour we had a shared room and an unpleaseant experience. We ended up signing out AMA just to get home and relax. We are so happy we did! More on this another day.

We now have a new baby girl – Ayla – 5 pounds 7 ounces. Here are some pictures.

Picking a Baby Name

Picking that perfect name for your baby – This has got to be the hardest part of having a baby (next to pregnancy, labour and sleepless nights of course :o )

First, do you know if your having a boy or girl? If not then you’ll obviously have to pick out twice as many names, like me! You can pick one name for each or pick several for boy and several for girl. We preferred picking several because we weren’t sure what we would like once we met our new baby. Looking back, I’m glad we did since my friend who had her baby 2 weeks before me picked our top boy name, haha! I guess that’s what we get for keeping secrets.

I had a book for picking out names, but it was long, tedious and tiring to look through. I found this great online source to help you pick a baby name, and I’m in the process of using it to pick the name for our newest addition!

BabyNames.com

This is a great site! I love it! At this site you can look at names by:

  • Most Popular – View names by which are the most popular (very helpful since a lot of names in the books are pretty bad or weird)
  • Name Search – you can do a name search by things like what letter the name should start with or how many syllables, or the meaning or origin of a name
  • View an entire list for boy or girl – if you want to be really thorough :o )

By far the most useful feature at this site though, is the ability to save your favorite names to you “NameList”. This is awesome because I keep coming accross names that I do like, then of course, I forget what my fave’s were.
