Brrrrr – Keep warm this Winter while Breastfeeding (or pregnant)

We’re coming up to another cold cold Canadian winter. This winter I’m breastfeeding and just the though of exposing any extra skin brings on a case of the goosebumps. Especially for those midnight feedings when you have to get out of your warm and cozy bed and into the chilly night air. So… how will I cope?

I’m getting some good nursing tops and sweaters that will keep that extra skin covered while breastfeeding. The great thing about a good nursing top is that, unlike a regular top, you don’t have to lift up your shirt and expose your belly and back to the chilly winter air. A nursing top has special openings that only expose the part of the breast required for breastfeeding keeping your belly and back warm and cozy.

Here is my favorite nursing top/sweater combo so far – the Double Layer Henley, then for added warmth I am wearing the Ruched Strip Hoodie over top.

For night time I am just using regular nursing pajamas, my favorite is the Lacey MJ, and then again I am wearing the Ruched Strip Hoodie over top.

As an added bonus, all of these items are good for maternity as well as for nursing so if you have a bun in the oven, you can use thse tops as well. Then when the wee one is born you can continue to use the same tops for breastfeeding.

So far I’m warm and cozy! How about you?

They say the Second Labour is easier than the first…

They say the Second Labour is easier than the first… don’t they? Yes, they do say that, but it is not always so, sometimes they are just different… very different.

For my second labour we went into it thinking we knew it all. Turns out we knew nothing!! First labour was textbook (see full story at First Labour Blog Post). Started with minor contractions, built up to major contractions, went to the hospital, had a baby. Less than 10 hours start to finish.

With my second labour it was not textbook at all.

Water broke early friday morning (right on the due date) at 2am, no signs of labour otherwise. Mozied on to the hospital for around 4am, still no signs of labour. Got to the hospital along with many other women who’s waters also broke at 2am, nurses were saying must have been a low pressure system or something. It was super busy so we couldn’t get a room, sat in a triage bed for a few hours, but at least I wasn’t one of the women labouring in the lounge! Got moved to a regular room around 8am, still no real labour, a few tiny contractions but nothing useful. Started to induce labour around 2pm, but baby didn’t do well with that idea so we stopped induction to give baby a rest, still no useful contractions. Started induction again at 7pm, nothing useful. 8pm the nurse thought a full bladder might be preventing baby from dropping, emptied bladder and had a baby 30 minutes later!! It was a bit intense going from 0 to 60 in a half hour, but at least it was over quick!!

So basically it was 18 hours of nothing and then 30 minutes with 5 major contractions, 1 big push and then baby! Not at all like our first!!

Then of course the hospital stay was completely different. First labour we had a private room and a pleasant experience. Second labour we had a shared room and an unpleaseant experience. We ended up signing out AMA just to get home and relax. We are so happy we did! More on this another day.

We now have a new baby girl – Ayla – 5 pounds 7 ounces. Here are some pictures.

My First Labour

My First Labour was back in 2007, exactly 1 week before the actual due date.

The day before the labour I took the afternoon off of work, went home and took a nap, had a shower, shaved my legs. I was feeling great! Perfect time for all this last minute pampering since I was to go into labour that night at 2am!

Labour went well, much quicker than expected, but otherwise it was pretty textbook. Woke up at 2am with mild contractions, thought it was false labour. Started timing at 4am, woke Chris up at 5:30am, still thought it was false labour. I considered sending Chris to work (glad we didn’t do that! ). We thought about going to Salsbury House for breakfast (glad we didn’t do that!). Then around 7:00am we decided it wasn’t false labour and figured we should pack (yes, that’s right we weren’t packed in advance). Chris packed while I laboured. At 7:30am I told him to pack faster, then eventually told him to skip packing and only take the essentials which I quickly named off between contractions. Threw the essentials into the suit case and took off in very active labour. Got to the hospital around 8:30am and I was 8-9 cm dilated already. Wanted an epidural, couldn’t get one, we were too late. Got into my room around 9:00am and was 10cm and ready to push in no time. Pushed for less than 2 hours and he was born at 11:48am.

We got a private room at the hospital which was nice and the nurses were great. We watch hockey, ordered in Pizza and got to know our new baby boy – Connor James Crosbie – 6 pounds 11 ounces. It was a great weekend!

Of course there were a few challenges – learning to breastfeed being #1. He turned out to be a great breastfeeder in the end, it just took a bit of work upfront. Latching was the hardest part with both mom and baby doing it for the first time. Each time I fed him we spent 20 minutes trying to latch. Eventually though we both got the hang of it and were off to a wondeful breastfeeding experience.

Here are some pictures of our son.

Getting Ready for Baby

I am having a baby in 2.5 weeks (give or take 2.5 weeks of course). I’m starting to get into panic mode where I’m realizing that I might not have all the things I need. I still need to pack my hospital bags. I didn’t do this on time with my first child and ended up atempting to pack during labour. We eventually had to abandon packing and go to the hospital without a few things. This time I plan to be packed before labour begins!

Here is a list of things to pack for the hospital: Packing for the Hospital Birth

And of course the next big question is, when exactly should I go to the hospital? According to my Doctor she says I should go in when my contraction are 3-5 minutes apart and I can not walk or talk during contractions. So I guess this means I should be timing my contractions. Here is a Contraction Worksheet that I will use to time my contractions.

Next – Baby Names. Picking that perfect name for your baby, this has got to be the hardest part of having a baby (next to pregnancy, labour and sleepless nights of course :o )

First, do you know if your having a boy or girl? If not then you’ll obviously have to pick out twice as many names, like me! You can pick one name for each or pick several for boy and several for girl. We preferred picking several because we weren’t sure what we would like once we met our new baby. Looking back, I’m glad we did since my friend who had her baby 2 weeks before me picked our top boy name, haha! I guess that’s what we get for keeping secrets.
I had a book for picking out names, but it was long, tedious and tiring to look through. I found this great online source (www.BabyNames.com) to help you pick a baby name, and I’m in the process of using it to pick the name for our newest addition!
So this should get you ready before you leave for the hospital. But what do I need for the new baby once I get home. Of course there’s the obvious like a crib and some diapers, but what else? Check out this complete list of things you’ll need to have on hand for when you and your new baby arrive home: What do we need for baby?
These are my lists and charts to help me get ready for labour. I hope they can help you too! If I’ve forgotten anything please let me know and I’ll add it to the lists.

BabyNames.com

This is a great site! I love it! At this site you can look at names by:

  • Most Popular – View names by which are the most popular (very helpful since a lot of names in the books are pretty bad or weird)
  • Name Search – you can do a name search by things like what letter the name should start with or how many syllables, or the meaning or origin of a name
  • View an entire list for boy or girl – if you want to be really thorough :o )

By far the most useful feature at this site though, is the ability to save your favorite names to you “NameList”. This is awesome because I keep coming accross names that I do like, then of course, I forget what my fave’s were.
